The route: Aydın-Denizli motorway
The journey from Kusadasi follows the D-525 to Söke, joins the O-31 Aydın motorway eastbound, then continues on the D-320 / O-31 through Aydın, Nazilli and Sarayköy. The road is fully paved motorway-quality the whole way, with two coffee/restroom stops typical at well-equipped service stations.
Total drive time: 2h45m to 3h15m depending on traffic. We aim to arrive at Pamukkale by 10:30 if leaving at 07:30.
At Pamukkale: what you'll see
The single archaeological park combines:
- The travertine terraces — the white cascading pools you see on every postcard. Walk barefoot on the marked paths (shoes are not allowed on the travertines themselves)
- Hierapolis ancient city — Greek and Roman ruins, including a remarkably preserved theatre, the Plutonium (the "Gate to Hell"), Roman baths, and the necropolis
- Cleopatra's Pool — a thermal pool inside the park where you can swim among submerged Roman columns (separate small fee, bring swimwear)
- The Hierapolis Archaeology Museum — sculptures, sarcophagi, and finds from the site
A typical visit is 4-5 hours. Wear comfortable shoes, bring sun protection in summer, and a swimsuit if you want to swim in Cleopatra's Pool.
