Guvercinada — Pigeon Island Castle, Kusadasi

Pigeon Island (Guvercinada) in Kusadasi: the small castle on the rock opposite the cruise port, how to walk there, what to see and the best sunset spot in town.

Guvercinada — Pigeon Island — is the small fortified rock directly opposite Kusadasi cruise port, joined to the town by a causeway. You can see it from every ship that docks; walking there takes about ten minutes from the terminal exit.

What it is

The castle was built for coastal defence and later used by Ottoman customs. The walls and the small inner garden are intact, and the rampart walk gives the best view back over the port, the town and the ships.

The walk

From the port gate, follow the waterfront south along the promenade — the causeway appears on the right. The island is flat and easy underfoot; the full circuit takes twenty to thirty minutes with photo stops.

Why go

  • The best sunset in Kusadasi — the sun drops behind the Aegean with the castle silhouette in front.
  • Close to everything — no transport needed, works even on a two-hour port call.
  • Quieter than the bazaar at midday.

Practical notes

  • Entry is on a small ticket at the causeway end — keep small notes or a card handy (check the current price at the gate, it changes season to season).
  • Opening hours track daylight; the island closes after dark.
  • No shade inside the walls — bring water in summer.
  • The causeway area has cafes and a small public beach on the town side.

Combine it with

Guvercinada + Kaleici + the Grand Bazaar make a natural two-to-three-hour loop, all on foot from the port. For something bigger, see the one-day plan or book a Kusadasi to Ephesus transfer.
