Priene, Miletus, Didyma: Triple Ancient City Tour Guide

For history lovers on holiday in Kusadasi, three ancient cities live in the shadow of Ephesus yet lack nothing compared to it: Priene, Miletus and Didyma. The three can easily be visited in a single day by private transfer — as independently as you wish, and in as much detail as you want. In this guide we explain how we plan the whole day, what you will see and where we stop.

Why a "triple" tour?

These three ancient cities were among the most important members of Ionian civilization. You can see different faces of the same civilization within a 50 km arc:

• Priene: Built on a mountain slope, Hippodamos's grid plan, the most "tidy" Ionian city
• Miletus: In the plain of the Great Meander, a port city, birthplace of Thales and Anaximander
• Didyma: Temple city, massive columns dedicated to Apollo, a centre of prophecy

Spreading the three across separate days makes no sense — they are on the same route and fit comfortably into a single day.

Itinerary and timing

08:00 — Pickup

We collect you from your Kusadasi hotel, Airbnb or the port. If breakfast is included, take it; otherwise we can stop in Söke along the way.

09:15 — Priene (1.5 hours)

After Söke you head to the town of Güllübahçe, then turn onto the Priene road. From the car park it is a 400-metre walk on a moderate slope to the ancient city. Must-see highlights:

• Temple of Athena: 5 columns still standing, designed by Pytheos
• Bouleuterion (Council House): 640 seats, very well preserved
• Theatre: 5 stone VIP seats still intact
• Agora: Traces of the marketplace
• Houses: Single-storey stone homes, very rare in Greek sites

Priene sits at 130 metres altitude; a welcome breeze in summer heat. Sports shoes are essential.

11:00 — Early lunch break in Güllübahçe (1 hour)

On the way out of Priene, Güllübahçe village has local restaurants. Our picks:

• Priene Restaurant: Homemade mantı, fresh Meander river fish, garden
• Kovan Kahvaltı: Village breakfast (€10 per person), organic honey

May be closed in winter — open during the summer season.

12:15 — Miletus (2 hours)

25 minutes south of Güllübahçe. Miletus was an ancient port city — but silt from the Great Meander filled the harbour, leaving the city 10 km inland. That is why today Miletus sits in the middle of the plain and makes you wonder "why here?"

Must-see highlights:

• Great Theatre: 15,000 seats, Roman period, steps intact
• Baths of Faustina: Entrance adorned with lion statues
• Delphinion: Sanctuary of Apollo Delphinios
• İlyas Bey Mosque (15th century): A delicate example of Islamic addition; ancient marbles reused
• Miletus Museum: Small but dense; finds from Miletus and Didyma

14:30 — Didyma / Didim (2 hours)

17 km south of Miletus, in today's Didim. The Temple of Didyma is one of the largest structures of the ancient world — the third biggest after the Temple of Artemis.

• Temple of Apollo: 108 columns (122 were planned; the temple was never finished); 3 columns still stand 20 metres high
• Medusa Head: One of the entrance blocks; the classic photo
• Oracle Chamber (Adyton): The inner courtyard held the sacred spring where priests read prophecies
• Column Shafts: Base diameter 2 metres; how these single blocks of marble were transported from the inhospitable Meander plain remains legendary

16:30 — Altınkum beach stop (optional, 45 min)

If the tour finishes in Didim and the summer sun is still shining, a short beach and ice-cream break 3 km away at Altınkum is the perfect closer. Not mandatory; history lovers can head straight back.

17:30 — Return, 18:45 Kusadasi

We drive back via Söke; along the way the driver explains the agricultural culture of the region (cotton, olives, fig fields).

Tip: If you visit all three sites, buying the Turkey Museum Pass works out cheaper. The Turkey Pass costs around €45 and covers these three sites plus Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary.

Who is it ideal for?

• History enthusiasts: Anyone who wants to see Roman/Greek architecture in detail
• Photographers: Wide stone sites are magical in morning and afternoon light
• Walking lovers: Each site involves 1–2 km of walking on uneven ground
• Families: Fun for children aged 8 and over; younger ones may tire

Who is it not suitable for?

• People with leg problems (lots of walking involved)
• Parents with babies under 3 (summer heat, limited toilets)
• Anyone who gets bored after 4 hours of stone and soil — in that case we shorten the tour to 6 hours

Summer caution

In July and August, the low-altitude sites of Miletus and Didyma reach 38–40°C. Visiting between 12:00 and 15:00 is exhausting — this is why we plan Priene in the morning, Miletus after lunch and Didyma late afternoon.

Bring with you:

• Plenty of water (at least 2 L)
• Hat, sunscreen
• Sports shoes (sandals are not enough; the stones are slippery)
• Small backpack

FAQ

Can we visit without a guide? Yes. Info panels at each site are in English. If you want detailed narration we can add a guide.

Is there a toilet at Priene? There is a basic toilet at the car park. Miletus and Didyma entrances have proper restrooms.

Do restaurants accept credit cards? Some places in Güllübahçe are cash-only. In Didim you can pay by card without issue.
