1. House of Virgin Mary (Meryemana Evi)
Location: About 9 km south of Ephesus, on Bulbul Mountain Entrance fee: ~€7 per person Open: 08:00 – 18:00 (summer), 08:30 – 17:00 (winter)
Why is it important?
After the crucifixion of Jesus, John brought Mary to the area near Ephesus. Based on the 19th-century visions of Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich, French priests located the house in 1891, and archaeological evidence confirmed it. Popes Leo XIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis have all visited.
What's there?
- Inside the house: Now arranged as a small chapel, a brief service can be held
- Wishing wall: The tradition of tying white cloth strips (visitors of every faith)
- Sacred water fountains: 3 fountains — health, abundance, love
- Outer garden: Olive trees, a calm setting
Visiting rules
- Silence is expected inside the chapel
- Photography: free in the outer garden, restricted inside the chapel
- Dress: covered shoulders + below the knee (a requirement of every faith)
- Candles: candle sales and a lighting area outside the house
Prayer and mass
Daily services at 09:00, 11:00, 15:00. Special groups can book a priest. The mass language rotates among English, Turkish and Spanish.
2. Christian traces at Ephesus
Church of Mary (Double Church)
Just off the main Ephesus road. It is believed the Council of Ephesus in 431 — at which Mary was officially declared "Theotokos" (God-bearer) — was held here. The ruins are partly standing, the atmosphere moving.
St Paul's Gate + "Great Theatre"
The riot at Ephesus recounted in Acts 19:23-41 — where silversmith Demetrius turned the crowd against Paul — happened in this very theatre. The community Paul wrote to worshipped here.
3. Basilica of Saint John (Selcuk, Ayasuluk Hill)
Location: Central Selcuk, near the Ephesus Museum Entrance fee: ~€8 Open: 08:30 – 19:00
Why it matters
Emperor Justinian built it in the 6th century over the tomb of John the Evangelist, who wrote the fourth gospel. In its day one of the largest churches in the world. The ruins are still standing, the tomb area marked.
What to see
- The tomb area — in the central part, marble-marked
- Basilica columns — re-erected, original
- Baptistery — cross-shaped pool
- Treasury — moved to the museum, an info panel at the original spot
4. Isa Bey Mosque (Selcuk)
Right next to the Basilica. Built by the Aydinid dynasty in 1375. Roman marble columns reused. Seeing Christian and Muslim layers in the same place is powerful.
5. Additional stops (optional)
Old Sirince Church
Sirince was a Greek village before 1924. The church has been restored and turned into a small exhibition. A 20-minute detour on the route.
Pamukkale — the martyrium at Hierapolis
Adds a full day — a separate tour is required. The tomb of the Apostle Philip is here.
Didim — Temple of Apollo
A pagan temple, but interesting in the Christian timeline (ancient Greek → Roman → Christian transition).
