Marella Discovery Kuşadası: The Family Shore Excursion Guide

Marella Discovery brings British TUI families to the Eastern Mediterranean on fun-filled all-inclusive holidays. When the ship docks at Kuşadası, the question is always the same: what gives the whole family — kids, parents, maybe grandparents — the best day ashore?

The answer, more often than not, is a private day out with Kuşadası Express. Your group only, a comfortable 7-seat Mercedes, and a driver who keeps everyone on time for the all-aboard.

Ephesus: Where History Becomes an Adventure

Ephesus Ancient City is 25 km from Kuşadası port, about 30 minutes away. Entry is approximately €25-30 per person. For families with children of school age, Ephesus is not a dry history lesson — it is an exploration.

Think about it from a child's perspective:

  • A theatre that seats 25,000 people — they will want to stand on the stage and shout
  • Streets paved in marble that you can actually walk on
  • 2,000-year-old graffiti scratched into stone walls (genuine ancient graffiti exists in the brothel area — parents can decide how much context to provide)
  • The Library of Celsus — for children who have done ancient Rome at school, this is the real thing

A family-paced visit runs about 2-2.5 hours. Take water, sun cream, and comfortable shoes.

Tips for Families at Ephesus

  • Enter from the upper Magnesia Gate and walk downhill — less tiring for smaller legs
  • The Terrace Houses are excellent for older children (ages 10+) who appreciate detail; for younger children the open street is more fun
  • There are shaded rest areas near the Odeon and near the site exit

Şirince: Ice Cream and Pomegranate Wine

A 15-minute drive from Ephesus brings you to Şirince village. For families, Şirince offers cobbled lanes to explore, excellent fresh-squeezed pomegranate juice, Turkish ice cream (dondurma — the stretchy kind, served with a theatrical flourish that children adore), and terrace restaurants with proper food at reasonable prices.

Allow an hour here — enough for lunch, a wander, and some photos.

Dilek National Park: Beach and Nature for Active Families

If your family has already visited Ephesus on a previous Marella cruise, Dilek Peninsula National Park (40 km south of Kuşadası) is the alternative to beat. The park sits on a dramatic peninsula with several secluded coves: Zeus Cave beach (Zeusbük), Karasu, and Kavakburnu.

Clear Aegean water, pine-forested coastline, and almost no commercialisation. For families who want to swim, snorkel, and eat a picnic on a beach that feels far from any resort, Dilek is a genuine treat.

Guaranteed Back Before All-Aboard

Marella passengers are often nervous about this — and understandably so. Missing the ship on a TUI package holiday is the kind of thing that makes for a long phone call home.

Your driver knows your all-aboard time from the start of the day. Every itinerary has buffer time factored in. If the road back to Kuşadası is slower than expected, we cut the Şirince visit short, not the port arrival. You will make the ship.

Family-Friendly Pricing

Our tours are priced per vehicle (up to 7 passengers), not per head. That makes private tours genuinely good value for families of 4, 5, or 6 — often cheaper per person than the Marella ship excursion. No prepayment required. Pay in cash on the day. Book at kusadasiexpress.com.

FAQs

What age is Ephesus suitable for? In our experience, children aged 6 and above genuinely enjoy Ephesus, especially the theatre and the main street. Under 6s can manage it but may lose interest after 45-60 minutes. We can factor a shorter Ephesus visit into the itinerary if you are travelling with very young children and fill the day with Şirince and beach time instead.

Is there anywhere to buy lunch near Ephesus? The village of Selçuk, near the Ephesus exit, has several good café-restaurants at reasonable prices. Şirince (15 min drive) has better atmosphere and views. We recommend Şirince for a relaxed family lunch after Ephesus — the food is good, the setting is lovely, and children have space to run around.
