How to Get from Kusadasi to Ephesus Ancient City — The Complete Guide
How do you travel from Kusadasi to Ephesus? Private transfer, fares, journey time, tips and practical information — updated 2026 guide.
For guests planning the trip from Kusadasi to Ephesus Ancient City, we answer the six most frequently asked questions in one place: how long does it take, how much does it cost, which route is shortest, what is the entrance fee, how is the return organised, and is morning or afternoon the better time to go.
At a glance
- Distance: ~19 km
- Travel time by private car: 25–35 minutes (depending on traffic)
- Ephesus entrance fee: As of April 2026, around €40 per person for foreign visitors (separate rate for Museum Pass holders)
- Busiest hours: 10:00–13:00 (after cruise ships disembark)
- Recommended visiting time: 08:30 opening or after 15:00 in the afternoon
Transport options
1. Private transfer (the most comfortable)
Door-to-door service from your hotel / Airbnb / the port straight to the Ephesus gate. With the wait-and-return option, the same car stays with you — after your visit it takes you back to Kusadasi. For cruise passengers the "wait & return" package is particularly recommended: zero risk of missing the ship, guaranteed return on time.
Private transfer is fixed price — no surge pricing, no hidden fees. Air conditioning, complimentary water and child seats (on request) are included.
2. Public bus + walking
There is a bus from Kusadasi bus station to Selcuk (~15 TL, 40 minutes). From Selcuk to the Ephesus gate is 3 km — either taxi (~80 TL) or on foot (45 min, very hot in summer). Total around 1.5 hours and uncomfortable.
3. Car hire
Renting a car in Kusadasi is possible (800–1500 TL a day). But the Ephesus car park may be full; you could end up walking from the Selcuk side of the Great Menderes to the Upper Gate.
4. Coach tours
Guided package tours generally cost €25–40 per person, but the schedule is fixed, you can't go off on your own, and you're tied to the group's pace. Not ideal for travellers who value privacy.
The route — which of the two gates?
Ephesus has two gates:
- Upper (Magnesia) Gate — Selcuk side
- Lower (Harbour) Gate — Kusadasi side
The practical trick: Enter from the Upper Gate and walk downhill to exit at the Lower Gate. That way you see all the highlights (Library of Celsus, Great Theatre) going downhill — no doubling back. Your driver meets you again at the Lower Gate.
Entrance fees (2026)
| Site | Fee (foreign visitors) | |---|---| | Ephesus Ancient City | ~€40 | | Terrace Houses (extra ticket) | ~€10 | | Ephesus Museum (in Selcuk) | ~€8 | | House of Virgin Mary | ~€7 |
We don't collect these fees — you pay at the gate by card or cash. Museum Pass includes them.
Morning or afternoon?
Morning 08:30 opening: Cool, light is beautiful for photos, no crowds. The best option. Midday 11:00–14:00: Cruise groups fill up, 35–40°C summer heat, crowded. After 15:00: Tours have left, light is warm and golden. But closes at 17:00.
For cruise passengers
If your ship is docked at Kusadasi port:
- Your transfer is waiting at the port exit (with a name sign)
- You reach Ephesus in 25 minutes (before the 08:30 opening)
- 2 hours is enough for the visit (Library, Theatre, Temple of Hadrian)
- You can add 20 minutes to Sirince for an hour of wine tasting
- Around midday, back to Kusadasi for Turkish coffee + mosaic shopping before reboarding
- Maximum 5 hours for the whole tour; you are at the port 1 hour before sailing time
Recommendations
- Hat, sunscreen, 1 litre of water
- Flat shoes — the marble stones are slippery
- Early hours for photos (softer shadows)
- The front of the Library of Celsus is the most popular pose; the back is usually empty and gives a better shot
- The Terrace Houses add 30 minutes but are worth it — extra ticket
After the visit in Kusadasi
On the way back to your hotel, the transfer can add stops at Sirince (a real village, wine, tranquillity) or the House of Virgin Mary (near Ephesus, Christian pilgrimage site). Let us know in advance and the route is planned; the price stays fixed.
