Didim Temple of Apollo — Day Trip by Transfer from Kusadasi

The Didim (ancient name Didyma) Temple of Apollo is the largest temple ruin of Ancient Greece — twice the size of Athens' Parthenon, and still imposing today with only two columns fully standing. It can be visited as a day trip from Kusadasi, 1 hour away.

About the Temple of Apollo

One of the most important oracle centres of Ancient Greece, dating to the 6th century BC. Destroyed by the Persians, rebuilt by Alexander the Great, it continued through Roman times. Closed in the 5th century as Christianity spread.

• Medusa head — a well-preserved relief on a step
• The Sacred Way — a 16 km sacred road from Miletus to Didim (some ruins visible)

Tour route (hour by hour)

09:00 — Depart Kusadasi

Set off by private car. Highway via Soke, then Akkoy.

10:15 — Priene + Miletus short stops (optional)

On the way to Didim, in the same ancient region, are two other cities:

• Priene (8 km detour) — at the foot of the mountain, Hellenistic planning, location of the Zeus statue
• Miletus (5 km detour) — city of Anaximander and Thales, ancient harbour

30 minutes at each is enough. If you're not an archaeology enthusiast, just go Didim-focused.

11:00 — Didim Temple of Apollo

A 50 m walk from the entrance to the ruins. Visit 1.5-2 hours.

13:00 — Lunch at Altinkum

4 km from Didim. Beach-front fish taverns, pide, gozleme. €15-25 per person.

14:30 — Altinkum Beach (optional swim)

Didim's beach district. Yellow sand (hence the name), shallow sea, light breeze.

16:00 — Return to Kusadasi

Altinkum Beach

Takes its name from the yellow sand. Popular with British tourists, child-friendly sea entry. Cafés + bars + snack stands.

Mavisehir Cove

North of Altinkum, quieter, good for photos. Village economy.

Akbuk Cove

15 km northeast of Didim, a luxury villa area. Crystal-clear sea.

Tips

• Sunscreen + hat — Temple of Apollo is open, no shade
• Frequent water — dehydration risk on 35°C summer days
• Flat shoes — stone steps are slippery (especially when wet)
• Golden hours for photos — morning 09:00–10:00 or evening 17:00-18:00
• For swimming: loungers at Altinkum €10

For history lovers

Heraklia Latmos (ancient Latmos) on the Didim road — in the other direction from Kusadasi (Bafa Lake) but in the same ancient Carian region. Ideal combination if you plan a two-day ancient tour.

Summer extra: on the return from Didim to Akkoy you may see cotton fields and the delta birds of the Great Menderes.

Didim is not recommended for cruise passengers — 6 hours isn't enough to get there and back plus visit. This tour is ideal for guests staying at least 2 nights in Kusadasi.

Summer (June-August)

Crowded but sunny. Altinkum advantage — beach after the temple.

Autumn (September-October)

Cool weather, crowds thinning. The golden time for photos.

Winter (November-February)

Altinkum closed, but the temple open. Quiet, mystical atmosphere.

Spring (March-May)

The best — green spring, medium crowd, 20°C.
